Documents Required for Driving Licence Test in India

Before you head to the RTO for your Learner's Licence (LLR) or Driving Licence test, having the right paperwork ready saves a wasted trip. Requirements can vary slightly by state, so always check your state transport department's latest notice — but these are the documents almost every RTO in India asks for.

For the Learner's Licence test

Proof of age (birth certificate, 10th marksheet, or passport), proof of address (Aadhaar card, voter ID, utility bill, or passport), a recent passport-size photograph, and the completed application form (Form 2). Most RTOs now accept Aadhaar-based e-KYC to skip separate address/age proof uploads.

For the Driving Licence (permanent) test

Your Learner's Licence, proof of having held the LLR for the mandatory minimum period, address proof, and the driving test application form (Form 4/DL-4, depending on the state's portal). Some states also ask for a medical certificate (Form 1A) for transport vehicle licences or applicants above a certain age.

Good to check before you go

Confirm whether your state's RTO requires original documents plus photocopies, or an online-uploaded set with only originals for verification. Carry a couple of extra passport photos — kiosks at the RTO aren't always reliable.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need for a driving licence test in India?+

You typically need age proof, address proof, a passport-size photo, and the relevant application form (Form 2 for Learner's Licence, Form 4 for the driving test), plus your existing Learner's Licence when appearing for the permanent licence test.

Is Aadhaar card enough for the driving licence test?+

In most states, Aadhaar can serve as both address and identity proof through e-KYC, but it's worth checking your state RTO portal since requirements aren't identical everywhere.
